My Journey as a First-Time Author: Lessons Learned

Updated: May 5

Publishing my first book was a milestone I had dreamed about for years. Yet, nothing prepared me for the realities that followed. The first year after publication brought a mix of excitement, challenges, and valuable lessons that shaped my journey as an author. If you are considering publishing your work or have recently done so, this reflection might offer insights to help you navigate your own path.

Understanding the Publishing Process Beyond Writing

Many writers focus intensely on crafting their manuscript but underestimate the complexity of the publishing process. After I published my book, I quickly realised that writing was only part of the journey.

Editing Takes Time and Patience

The editing phase involved multiple rounds of revisions. I learned to accept constructive criticism and to view editing as a way to improve clarity and impact rather than a personal attack.

Cover Design Matters More Than I Thought

The cover is the first thing readers see. Collaborating with the designer taught me how important it is to balance creativity with market appeal.

Formatting is a Technical Challenge

Preparing the manuscript for print and digital formats required attention to detail. Small formatting errors can distract readers and reduce professionalism.

This phase taught me that publishing is a team effort. Writers benefit from trusting editors, designers, and formatters to bring the book to life.

Building an Audience Takes Consistent Effort

One of the biggest surprises was how much work goes into reaching readers. Publishing the book did not automatically lead to sales or recognition.

Start Building Your Audience Early

I wish I had begun connecting with potential readers before publication. Sharing excerpts, blog posts, or newsletters can create anticipation.

Engage with Readers Authentically

Responding to emails and reviews helped me understand what readers appreciated and what they wanted more of.

Use Multiple Channels to Reach Readers

I experimented with book readings, local events, and online forums. Each platform attracted different types of readers.

Patience is Essential

Audience growth is gradual. I saw slow but steady increases in engagement over months rather than days.

This experience showed me that writing the book is only the first step. Building relationships with readers requires ongoing attention and genuine interaction.

Discovering the Power of TikTok

One of the biggest surprises for me was TikTok. I went into it unsure, expecting it to feel out of place. As someone who didn’t grow up with social media, it felt like stepping into something completely unfamiliar. But what I found was something else entirely: a community.

Readers and writers from all backgrounds and ages came together. They understood the excitement, the nerves, and the passion behind storytelling. People supported each other, shared advice, and celebrated every win, no matter how small.

It quickly became one of the most important parts of my journey. Now, I can’t imagine doing this without them.

Blurb

A snowstorm traps Bartholomew in Salvation Rise, an isolated religious commune where his best friend, Grace, has vanished. Inside, the leader’s influence runs deep, the rituals grow darker, and every smile hides something dangerous. Shadows move where they shouldn’t, loyalties shift without warning, and Bartholomew can’t tell who to trust—not even himself. With a determined journalist at his side, he must unravel the truth before the storm clears… or the commune closes in for good.

Each of these moments was made even more special by the people around me—the readers, friends, and supporters who celebrated them with me.

I am so excited to see what the next year will bring!

Thank you!
